Week 12 11/12 – 11/16

This week is going will be filled with a lot of reading and literary analysis as we begin reading one of the greatest American novels. The students will analysis the book from literary, historical, and religious perspectives. The homework will be reading from the book. There will be several quizzes over the reading and maybe one quiz over the notes near the end of the week. All the readings are out of The Scarlet Letter.

Monday – read chapters 4-6

Tuesday – read “What were the Puritans Really Like”

Wednesday – Do WW 2. Excer. A.

Thursday – read chapters 4-6.

Friday – read chapters 7-9 and WW 2 Excer. C.





Week 11 11/5 – 11/9

This is the first full week of this nine weeks. We are going to finish the unit on early American Literature this week so there will be a test, and then we are going to start reading The Scarlet Letter. Here are the homework assignments for this week. (Please note that the review sheet is completely optional. It is merely designed as a tool to help you review for the test.)

11/5 – Study the introductory material for Early American Literature in preparation for a quiz tomorrow.

11/6 – Study the review sheet given in class.

11/7 – Study the review sheet given in class.

11/8 – After the test I will give out the new novel, The Scarlet Letter. Homework will be to read the introduction and the first chapter.

11/9 – Homework is to read chapters 2-3 (It is likely there will be a quiz on Monday).





Week 10: 10/29 – 11/2

This week is short but we still have much to do. I hope to finish off our reading for the Early American period of American literature. We will then review and the student will need to be ready for a test over pages 1-84 in their textbook, and all the notes from class since we finished Huckleberry Finn.

Johnathan Edwards.

10/30 Tuesday Review

10/31 Wednesday Review for test on Monday.

11/1 Thursday Reformation Day; dress up as a Biblical character or character from the reformation if you can, otherwise wear you formal chapel uniform.

11/2 Friday No School!!





Homework for the first nine weeks

On August 27 we will begin class under the assumption that both books assigned for the summer have been completed. I will give review assignments over the books but I am going to assume a familiarity with the content of the books.

Your first homework assignment is to get the class letter signed by one of your parents. It is due Friday (8/31) at the beginning of class. The page from mygradebook with your log in information is due tommorow at the begining of class 8/28.

8/28/07 Your homework tonight is to look over the the five discussion questions from classes and pick one to write a 200 word paper on. You need to do a bit of research and be prepared to write in class tomorrow.

What other characters in literature can you think of that are like Natty Bumppo, describe how they are like Natty? Discuss “archetype”
What are some of the themes that you think could be studied in this novel?
What does Cooper think of the Native American?
What does Cooper think of black people?
Is there much connection between the life and times of Cooper and the story he is telling in Last of the Mohicans?


8/29/07 In your vocabulary book do lesson 1 exercise a,b,d.


8/30/07 Tonight review all notes given in class this week for a quiz tomorrow.


8/31/07 No real homework today, just keep working on your paper that is due on Tuesday. Remember 200 words, MLA format, and try to have a quotation from the book. Do not forget that I need to have a hard copy of the paper and an electronic copy.

Have nice night no homework. However if you do not know you vocabulary words please study them. You need to be ready for a quiz on Friday, it will be an oral quiz and you will need to spell and define the words.

Please study your vocabulary and the basic ideas for MLA that we studied in class. I plan to give a quiz tomorrow over the vocabulary and MLA. The vocabulary part will be matching.

Well done on the quiz class! As for homework, keep working on your papers. Follow instructions carefully. Remember you will need to turn in your corrected outlines and the one i wrote on with your paper when you turn it in. Please remember I have extended the due date to Wednesday. On Monday bring the worksheets from Huck Finn, and your American Lit. text book to class. Make sure there is book cover on your textbook.

No take-home home work today, if you were in class. If you were not in class or did not get finished in class this is the assignment. You need to read page 2-13 in the class textbook. Then you need to write a brief explanation of each of the following:

1. What was the essence of puritanism?
2. What were the causes of Puritanisms decline?
3. What are the Beliefs of Deism?
4. What was the literary form of the time?
5. What was the subject matter that they (the Puritans) wrote about?
6. What was the World view of the Puritans?
7. What was the purpose of literature at the time?
8. What was the style of literature like?

Your answers need to be written in complete sentences, but they do not need to be long.
